Bye Bye Betsy

Fox News is reporting that University of Colorado President Betsy Hoffman, who defended radical professor Ward Churchill less than a week ago for comparing the victims of 9/11 to "Little Eichmanns," is resigning.

The Churchill controversy errupted just as Hoffman's 5-year performance review was scheduled, which prompted the university to delay the process until April or May, according to Dan Haley at the Denver Post. Besides Churchill, Hoffman has also been under intense scrutiny since charges of sexual harassment and abuse were aimed at Colorado's football coach, staff and players.

So Hoffman says she feared a new McCarthyism, huh? That one idiotic statement alone should be enough to make her lose her job.

That brings the body count to two accademics . Maybe Horowitz should send Churchill to Columbia. The ME studies department could be cleansed.

A couple of thoughts:

1. This has far more to do with the football scandals that went unpunished than with Ward Churchill, that's a non-issue to everyone except a handful of the tinfoil hat types on the right.

2. If it was motivated by the Ward Churchill situation, then shame on Hoffman for giving in to the commissars of the disingenuously titled "Academic Freedom" movement.

redbeard & beakerkin:

I have no reason to believe that Mister Horowitz' push for diversity on college campuses is NOT sincere. Perhaps I'm naive, but I don't believe it to be a witch hunt. Statements like yours would indicate otherwise, and lend credence to laeth's assertion of disingenuousnes.

With friends like these?...

Icarus, if you'll notice, the person who brought the tired old McCarthy/witch hunt canard into the issue was Hoffman, in trying to find some foothold in defending that poor beleaguered champion of free speech, Ward Churchill. I only commented upon her somewhat desperate use of that cheap accusation.

[RedBeard adjusts his tinfoil hat to a jaunty angle, and sets out for today's meeting of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy]

I apologize if I misconstrued the meaning of this statement.
